Sanjoy Banerjee obtained a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from IIT Kharagpur
in 1965 winning the P.C. Ray Award from the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers
for the best B.S. thesis in India that year. He obtained a Ph.D. in Chemical
Engineering in 1968 from the University of Waterloo as a National Research Council
of Canada Doctoral Research Fellow. After working for Atomic Energy of Canada
for eight years ultimately as Acting Director of the Applied Science Division,
he was in 1976 appointed as the Westinghouse Professor of Engineering Physics
at McMaster University and then in 1980 moved to UCSB, where he served as Chair
of Chemical and Nuclear Engineering from 1984-1989. He received a joint
appointment in the Mechanical Engineering Dept. in 1995.
